THE WAY IT GOES

The bombs fall from the sky.
The roadside bomb explodes.
Nobody stops to wonder why,
That’s just the way it goes.

Armies standing at the ready.
The river of death still flows.
War drums pounding steady,
That’s just the way it goes.

Some people starve, others relax,
No matter the way the wind blows.
Rich and poor, those are the facts,
That’s just the way it goes.

Many of us have no homes,
Some spend a fortune on clothes.
One will find, wherever he roams,
That’s just the way it goes.

From poverty, we look away,
Not our problem, we suppose.
It is so easy for us to say,
That’s just the way it goes.

Things are screwed up, just a touch,
And not all the inequity shows,
But do not worry about it too much,
That’s just the way it goes.

Raindrops running down the drain,
Upon the pavement that grows,
And to our children we explain,
That’s just the way it goes.
